Vet Practice Guide

We have broken this guide up into the following sections:

Content

Content is arguably the most important part of a website. Its what people come to your website for. Most people will think of text when they think of website content. While much of your website will be text your aim is to choose the best way to present and communicate what you need. When talking about treatments in many cases videos and pictures will communicate things far better. Another example would be adding directions to your website. A map from Google maps will help your visitors far more than text directions.

We have written a guide covering some of the key tips for writing good content - Tips for writing content

When creating content it important to think about the people who will be using it most. Its very easy to fall into the trap of creating content that you find useful and interesting not realising that it will help your clients very little. Another key thing to remember is that people do not read websites like the read a book. Studies into how people read and use websites have shown that people scan read web pages skipping through content looking for specific information. If that specific information cannot be found easily they tend to move on to the next page or next website. Even if you have the exact information they need if it cannot be found easily because it is in the middle of lots of text chances are it will not get found at all.

You also have to think about how the content is going to be displayed on your website. Are you going to have space to make full use of a specific image for example.

You also want remember about something called the page fold. The page fold of a website refers to the area below the part of the page that is initially loaded. Content that is below the fold of the page will involve the user having to scroll down to read it. This means the content above the fold has to include some form of incentive to the user to carry on reading.

You also need to think about the content that is already on your website. Are you repeating yourself? Can you refer back to content already on your website? Is this content in keeping with the rest of the site?

There are also legal requirements that your website will need to adhere to

All business websites need to display the following information:

  • Company name.
  • Geographical address.
  • Contact details (e.g. email and phone number).
  • Details of any professional organisations or institutions your company is registered with.
  • If you have one, a company number and place of registration.
